Effective Velocity Videos for Pitchers

Elevation Adds Speed

Watch Mariano Rivera pitching inside using a cutter and fastball.
Notice that the hitter is early on a cutter down and inside, but is late on a pitch that is up and inside. Both pitches have a velocity of 88 mph, but the batter perceives them differently.

Yu Darvish EV Speed Control

The ambidextrous Darvish uses different speeds and locations to get movement on his pitches

CJ Wilson LHP using Effective Velocity -  #Fastball Sinker Cutter (shatters bat)

Wilson is able to tunnel three different pitches so that the batter perceives them as fastballs, but each pitch has a unique location in the strike zone.
