Danny Newman pitched a three-hitter to lead visiting Curtis past Susan Wagner 8-1 in a PSAL game in Sea View Saturday.
Newman was masterful in Saturday's game, which was played in near-freezing temperatures at Wagner's wind-swept field. He allowed an unearned run in the second inning, and let his fielder's do the work the rest of the way, fanning three and walking one.
"He was great," said Formica. "He uses a lot of movement. He cuts and tails the ball, and he threw only 84 pitches. It helps (the defense) when the pitcher throws strikes. He's been working real hard and it shows."
"My catcher (Mike Piccirillo) called a good game, and I had a good two-seam fastball," said Newman, a junior righty who also had two hits and three RBI. "I still had another 40 pitches in me." Read more

Newman will also be counted upon to deliver offensively. "He's a switch-hitter with power, and he's fast," explained Coach Formica. Read more

Newman, who will be Curtis' leadoff batter and No. 2 hurler, is ambidextrous. A left shoulder injury has primarily limited him to being a right-hander in the preseason, but Formica said Newman – who pitched from both sides on the JV last year – could do so on the varsity once he's healthy.

New Rules on Pitching Count April 11, 2011 by Stephen Tompkins
Varsity pitcher Daniel Newman, an ambidextrous pitcher is not worried about these rules. “I understand that more pitchers will be used but the rule shouldn’t affect the team if our pitchers are throwing strikes.”Daniel Newman - Curtis HS, Maxpreps
