MOOSIC, Pa. - Yankees minor-leaguer Pat Venditte is one phone call away from his dream of making it to the major leagues. But there are two sides to this pitcher's story. If that call comes, Venditte will become the first man in major-league history to be promoted as an ambidextrous pitcher.

Pat Venditte update - River Avenue Blues
Trenton would not be denied, becoming the first Eastern League team since 1991 to win all six of its playoff games, finishing a three-game sweep of the Harrisburg Senators with an 11-4 victory to claim its third franchise title.
Trailing 7-1 into the sixth, the Senators had a chance to really get back into it. Jeff Howell's two-run single made it 7-3, and Harrisburg had runners on second and third with one out. That's when reliever Pat Venditte entered and stranded both with a shallow flyout and a strikeout.

The A's reportedly have signed a right-handed pitcher and a left-handed pitcher, all in one move.
The ambidextrous Pat Venditte will take his switch-pitching talents to Oakland on a Minor League deal that includes an invitation to big league Spring Training, according to a recent tweet from his agent, Marc Kligman. The club has not confirmed the signing.

Pat Venditte, the switch pitcher, is no longer a Yankee
Bill Veeck would have loved him: The lone pitcher of his - or any - generation to throw from both the left and right sides. You better believe, Veeck would never let two crappy seasons end without bringing this guy up, at least in September, to sell a few tickets.

Venditte, 29, is famous for being the game's only ambidextrous pitcher. He's pitched relatively well at each level of the minors he's reached, but hasn't been able crack a big-league roster. Venditte posted a 3.36 ERA in 56.1 relief innings at Triple-A Scranton in 2014.
Unfortunately, Pat Venditte did not receive a call up to play in the big leagues in 2014.
When Yankees expend their roster tonight, switch pitcher Pat Venditte will not be among the minor leaguers called up.

There have been countless switch hitters in the game's history, of course, but there has never been a pitcher to make it to the majors who could routinely throw with both arms. And Venditte is determined to prove that his pitching style is not a gimmick. He believes he can get big-league hitters out -- with either hand -- if given the chance.

The switch-pitching reliever is holding his own in Triple-A and should be seen as more than a novelty act.
I want to see Pat Venditte in the major leagues.
As you may know, Venditte is the only ambidextrous pitcher in professional baseball. A 20th round pick by the Yankees in 2008 out of Creighton University, Venditte was sometimes dismissed as a novelty act in college, but he was good enough in the NCAA (2.86 ERA over four seasons in the high-offense metal bat era, 255/64 K/BB in 245 innings) to get drafted on his own merits.
And he's remained very effective in the minors, too, despite a torn right labrum in 2012, reaching Triple-A this year and performing decently for Scranton (4.18 ERA but 2.34 FIP, 29/9 K/BB in 28 innings).
'Switch pitcher' Pat Venditte not a novelty act

Fans at Fifth Third Field on Thursday may not have realized they were in for a unique occurrence when Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher Pat Venditte trotted in from the bullpen.
Venditte can throw effectively with both arms, meaning he threw left-handed against left-handed hitters and right-handed against right-handed hitters. When he faced Toledo’s Trevor Crowe, a switch-hitter, Venditte opted to pitch as a southpaw.

Hey, have you guys gotten sick of all the hype yet about that Yankees prospect?
You must know the one I mean. His ERA this year, pitching in the two highest minor league levels, is an even 2.00. He's thrown 36 innings, and his walk rate is a tiny 1.8 per nine, his strikeout rate a fantastic 10.5 per nine. He sparkled for Double-A Trenton. Then, when called to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he struck out the first five batters he faced.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Pat Venditte made his RailRiders season debut a memorable one.
The switch-pitcher who was just promoted from Double-A Trenton fanned all five batters he faced to earn the win in the RailRiders’ 3-2 triumph over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday.

Mike asks: I get it that Pat Venditte doesn’t have great stuff, and his main point of interest is that he switch-pitches, but after seven years in the minors with a 2.31 ERA and 376/86 K/BB ratio, isn’t it at least worth just seeing if he can do it in AAA? Why not just release him if they believe in him that little?
This question was sent in right before Venditte was promoted to Triple-A Scranton. Teams still need players to fill out their minor league rosters and soak up the playing time left over by the actual prospects, which is why guys like Venditte continue to get jobs even though the team may not believe they’re a future big leaguer. No club has a prospect for every roster spot on every minor league affiliate. Organizational players are necessary and somewhat important. That said, Venditte has been nails against left-handers this year (.071/.188/.071 with a 43.8% strikeout rate). With Cesar Cabral and Fred Lewis both pitching poorly and getting demoted to Double-A Trenton recently, Venditte just might be next in line for a call-up if another lefty reliever is needed. Unlikely? Yeah, probably. It’s not completely far-fetched though.

Venditte had surgery on his right shoulder two years ago, and he returned last season to throw 28.2 innings at three different levels (3.45 ERA). He has been brought up to big league camp as an extra arm a few times this spring but hasn’t gotten into a game. Venditte is fully healthy now and throwing with both arms, and I think he’ll start the year with either Double-A Trenton or Triple-A Scranton. It might be Double-A because there are a ton of arms ticketed for Triple-A as it is. Venditte will turn 29 this summer, so he’s not some young prospect anymore. I don’t think he’ll get called up this year, but hey, he’ll be a minor league free agent next winter, so maybe another team will give him a shot. Since he’s gone unselected in the Rule 5 Draft several times, probably not.
The Yankees will bring a bunch of guys up from minor league camp to help fill the roster while roughly half of the guys in big league camp head to Panama. Those daily call-ups will actually start tomorrow with the split-squad game in Clearwater. Pitchers Tyler Webb and Pat Venditte are coming up for the day ...
